What would be the best gaming system to buy for an absolute beginner?

I want to buy some kind of gaming system for my husband's birthday. I have no idea what to buy because I do not pay attention to these things in the store. What is the best system to buy? What would be the approximate cost?

4. Wii has a lot of multi-player games that you and your husband can both enjoy. Wii Sports (which comes with the system) is probably the best multiplayer game on the system right now which is a ton of fun with more friends too.
