What is the best method to buy a cheap train ticket?

I need to buy a train ticket and want to know the best method to buy the cheapest ticket. Have read somewhere that its cheaper to buy singles or sometimes even buy to a destination half way to your final destination. I have looked on the various Virgin, First Great Western websites which give lots of different prices but only give you the availability to buy one of these.

6. Sometimes it can be cheaper to buy two singles than a return. Sometimes it is also cheaper to buy returns to a station haflway to your intended destination i.e. if travelling from Point A to Point C, buy returns Point A to Point B, and then from Point B to Point C. However, it always cheaper to buy tickets as early as possible to get the Apex deals. The only problem with this is that you have to travel on specific trains on your outward and return journeys.
