How do i buy indexes? Such as S&P 500, DJ Indu, Nasdaq.?

I've wondered how to buy indexes since i read the book called 'The Dick Davis Dividend.' In his book he suggests buying indexes, however I have not been able to buy any indexes. If anybody can tell me how to buy indexes i'll greatly appreciate it.

  1. Have you tried a stock broker? Dick Davis's book must have given you all the tools. Sheesh.
  2. Either go with index mutual funds from a mutual fund company or exchange traded funds. Vanguard is a good source for index funds http://www.vanguard.com/ Exchange traded funds can be bought through any broker. SPY is the symbol for the S&P 500, DIA is the symbol for Dow Jones, QQQQ is the symbol for the Nasdaq. The advantage of index mutual funds from a company is that you don't have to pay to buy and sell. The disadvantage is that you can only get out at the end of individual trading days, not during them.
  3. well if you want to invest in an index fund first you need to open a brokerage accound you a few are edtrade, td ameritrade, scotrade, and zecco i personally use zecco.com they offer 10 free trades a month. as for investing an an index you cant actually invest indexes, you can invest in etfs and mutual funds that mimic the index funds like the vanguard 500 index fund which is meant to mimic the s&p 500 index.
