What are the best stocks to "buy" right now?

I have a school project. I need to "buy" some stocks and record the price every week. Goal: "make money" by the end of the school year. Preferably stocks from the DOW or NASDAQ category. I am planning to look at what survived the recession- like gold.

  1. Stocks that will make money by the end of the school year is a tough one. Here is what I recommend although: General Electric GE, Google, Amazon.com, Exxon Mobile, and Citi Group. Good like, gold will probably go down when the dollar regains strength.
  2. Stocks are NEVER good for a "school year", Equity are to be invested for the long term. If you only have a "school year", you should not be in Equity. your school is teaching you stock speculation rather than stock investing.
  3. I have a strong feeling about Ford, Volcom has gone up $3 in the past month too..
  4. invest in GOLD!
  5. google for HSFX Asset Management and start making money!
  6. OK, buy stocks in mining companies here's why : The dollar is going to start going down like crazy, which means companies that produce a real commodity such as oil, gold, silver or iron ore are the best to have. Because these commodities are "worth" something for their intrinsic value. During times of financial crisis people are going to try to get rid of their paper currency and hold onto something that is worth value (like gold, silver, oil). TVs (samsung), Shoes (Nike), are not worth anything. So do not buy these stocks that much. Concentrate on companies that have the ability to produce something. Remember how troubled people were when the price of gas reached so high this summer ? Imagine something like that for years to come. Also, renewable energy will be back into the kick. Because the high price of gas and other raw material will make people invent and become creative. So watch out for that too. My picks are the following in each sector Raw Material BHP (Ticker:BHP) Vale (Ticker:RIO) Gold and Silver Franco-Nevada Agnico-Eagle Mines Yamana Pan-American silver corp (ticker:PAAS) Of course try to pick stocks that do not have a lot of mines or operation in the US. The deal is that in the future the US government is going to try to blame the speculators and greedy oil and gold companies for speculating the market. So they may seize their fields or mines (we call this Nationalization). OIL: Shell (RDS.A or RDS.B) BP (BP) But im sure that there are other oil companies out there. I havn't looked carefully enough. Now, you should also buy companies that do Utilities and Alternative Energy. Try to pick companies that are outside the US. I am personally lazy. So i didn't pick companies, i just picked two ETF Funds which contains a bunch of international stocks. These ETFs are: GEX - Alternative Energy Fund JXI - Global Utility Fund. Since gold is not a stock. You can buy gold as a stock :). Try the ticker GLD. You can also buy Silver as a stock by buying the ticket SLV. However I am not sure whether these holdings are paper commodity or real commodity. Either way this is your best bet if you want to buy precious metals as stocks. Last thing. Buy stocks in Asia. I do not know anything about stocks in Asia. But if I were you, I would just go to Asian funds and look at their big companies. Then buy these companies based upon their value. I can't help you there. Sorry. Either way, do not put your money in USD. This is a school project. It will be interesting what would happen. This is the way that I am personally diversifying (or starting to) in my real life portfolio. So, lets see how it goes. Email me by the end of the year at ayoubahmed at gmail dot com. This is a personal recommendation, do not go out there and put your real money based on my advice. In the end I am human and I can be wrong.
