Consumers Digest

Where do I find out who and where an item is manufactured? E.g. Where are Silvertone Flutes made?

My child is a second year band student. So far we have been renting instruments, but are concerned about purchasing a decent but not too expensive musical instrument. Is there a consumers' report or digest out there? Make and model, what to look for and watch out? Then where do I go to buy 'it'?
