What is the best way to buy magic cards?

Assuming you're not looking for specific cards and buying in random packs, what's the best way to buy magic the gathering cards and why? Is it worth it to buy the huge booster boxes, or does it make any sense to buy the 6 card packs?

1. Well, i would suggest going to ebay and looking up magic cards. people sell them by the thousands and some cards end up being really good. If not just go to your local card store and buy 6 card packs. The packs guarantee 1 rare card and the booster boxes suck.
2. I disagree. Booster boxes are an awesome value. You still get one rare per pack, and it's a much better deal than buying each pack individually... the fat packs are not a better deal. In fact, it's about the same as buying six packs for the money. True, you can go to Ebay, but if you don't have that kind of access, (like if you don't have a credit card... it's ok, neither do I,) then booster boxes are best. You get thirty-six packs for $80 or $100, depending on what your store is selling. That means you're buying each pack for basically half-price, or $2 to $2.50 a pop. And with thirty-six packs, you're basically guaranteed to get several worthwhile cards. Not only that, but the cards in each pack are worth more than the packs. Also, do you mean six-card packs or six-pack boxes? There's a difference. The six-card packs sold at Wal Mart for 1.95, (and elsewhere,) are certainly not worth it. You are NOT guaranteed a rare in those things. Believe me. I bought quite a few, and a lot of what I got sucked. Discount packs are cool. You can find them at Wal Mart. If you're just starting out, they're awesome... they give you ten lands, in addition to a booster pack and 20 cards for not much more than what you pay for a pack. The 20 cards are not limited in what they contain... you can get sucky cards with no rares, OR, what will more often happen is that you'll get more than one rare among the cards. I couldn't believe my luck when in the 20 cards, I packed two mythic rares and five rares. They were good rares, too.
