What is the best time of year to buy the cheapest airline tickets?

Is it better to buy tickets early? How early should you buy a ticket to get the best deal? Does it matter if you buy a ticket for a certain time of year at a different time to get the best price?

1. 6 months in advance before the trip
2. call the airline you want to take and tell them where you want to go and what days and they'll tell you what days you can buy them...The earlier you buy them the cheaper. We bought tickets to Paris a year before the flight. When your traveling to Europe the release the tickets an exact year before you go...we called at 12AM that day and got really good first class tickets.
