How difficult is it to be your own general contractor for home improvement projects? For example, I was thinking if you need plumbing, call in a plumber and say "tell me where you need to get at for what I want done and I will tear away the walls and floors for you". Same thing with electrical. Could I just say to an electrician "just tell me where you need to get at and I will open it up for you"? In terms of walls, everybody can put up drywall to patch up open spaces. In terms of framing, a DIY book should do just fine, right? My point is, just as long as you do your homework while still letting licensed people do plumbing and electrical, you should be able to save big bucks, right?
Ladies: In general, does your husband like helping out with the home improvement projects around the house? We bought a new home almost two years ago, and it's just as bare as it was the day we bought it. We have furniture for all of the rooms, but there are other things that I have been wanting to do such as: hang ceiling fans, install a garage door opener, hang curtains and valances, get our windows measured for wood blinds, install a screen door and a new front door, etc. The problem is I don't know how to do any of those things. My husband doesn't really know how either, but he's not interested in learning. I know how to use a power drill and hang pictures and other "no brainer" things, but I have a husband here, who's tall and healthy, and he won't even try. I suggested we do things together. Since neither of us know what to do, I thought it would be a good idea for both of us to try and figure it out. On the rare occasion that I can get him to do something he wants to take control of it. After weeks of basically begging him he finally hung the curtain rods, but believe me when I say he didn't want to do it. A year or so after we were married I had to "convince" him to purchase a new living room set. He finally agreed. Earlier this year I was finally able to convince him that we needed a bedroom set. He finally agreed. I purchased a used dining table and china cabinet off Craigslist for a good price earlier this year, so that's the only reason he was in agreeance to that. I understand he's a man and he's probably not interested in home decor like I am. That's my passion. But when I want to go find a picture, accessories for the house, furniture, etc. I have to do it alone. When I went to look for curtains I went by myself. There are times when I ask him to drive me somewhere to look at something for the house, and he refuses to go (because he doesn't like the fact that I walk around the store twice to make sure I'm not missing a deal). When he does agree to take me, which is rare because I try not to ask, he has an attitude. I can't even ask him to help me move anything around the house. Yesterday, I asked him to help me move the china cabinet down a little bit. It's two pieces and I'm short and didn't want to turn the whole thing over. He was in the middle of playing a video game when I asked him. I didn't want to ask him to begin with but I had no choice. He acted like I was killing him. He told me I should have asked him when his friends were over (on New Year's Eve ... as if I was thinking about it then) so he could have help. There's only a few glasses in the china cabinet and we moved those, and I was willing to help him ... I just didn't want to move it by myself. I just don't understand this. This is his house too, but it's almost like I have to beg him to do anything around here. I guess he figures because he's not interested in home decor and how things look, and since it's my thing, he shouldn't have to help. When I told him I was going to hire my cousin's handyman to help us out, he said, "I didn't think we had money for that" in a sarcastic tone. I've got to do something. I bought shelving for the pantry several months ago. After trying to get it up I asked him. He started talking about what I'd have to have to hang it, etc. ... when all the stuff we need is already at home. He just makes excuse after excuse when I ask him to do something of that nature ... and he always has something negative to say like, "That hanger isn't strong enough to hold that mirror" or "This isn't the right type of screw" when in reality it works just fine. A little history - he is an only child and his mother has never been into decorating. His father is not a home improvements type of guy either. In their home it's just whatever ... as long as they can use it they don't care how it looks. That's fine with me and I can respect that. That's their home and I don't look down on them because they're not into decorating, but I am ... I am sharp when it comes to computers and business stuff, but hardware, tools, and measurements just go right over my head. I'm horrible when it comes to math. But if I could learn how to do these things I would. I'm tired of begging him and as long as I sit and wait on him to become interested in what I'm doing (he'll never be that), I'll be sitting in the same place. I have several relatives who know how to do flooring, ceiling fans, etc. and I asked one to come help me the other day. The first thing he said is, "Okay ... but what about your husband?" I'm so embarassed because my family will ask if we've got this up and that up, and I have to say no ... and they're all looking like "Doesn't she have a husband?" What should I do? Edit: I was able to find some people to paint the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom ... after asking him to help me paint. I've never painted before, but I was willing to try because it couldn't be THAT hard. Edit 2: Yesterday, I decided to return the curtains I'd bought for my living and dining room. The panels were easy to hang, but I bought a scarf and couldn't get it to act right. Because I'm so short, and because the scarf is so long ... you really need two people to work with it. When I took it back to the store that's what the lady said ... exactly what she said ... it takes to people ... I just laughed. I don't have a second person.

Looking for your thoughts on outdoor improvements Buy American? We, like most, are watching our pennies, but I feel if we all stop spending then no jobs will be needed, and things will continue to spiral downward. It is important that we buy things that put America back to work. So many things are built out of the country we really should think about our purchases from now on. I know some things you can only get from there or are cost prohibitive, just use common sense, make sure you have some money put aside just in case, and enjoy life. Don't go into debt for your new project and plan for the most bang for the buck. It should be a good feeling for the project, not trying to make money in these times on home improvements. Projects will enhance your home to make it a more inviting place since most of us are staying home more. What would be some worthwhile projects around the house not too costly to make the outdoors a more home feeling kinda place and some good choices to Buy American?
How do I get a home improvement show to pick my house? my fiance and i recently purchased a house that needs some renovation. We love watching home improvement shows on channels such as HGTV and wanted to know how they pick their project houses. We need to renovate our dining room and kitchen and would love our renovations to be one of their projects. Does anyone know if you can contact them and submit your project or if they just rely on location scouts? thanks!

Need help on essay for school!!? The essay is about Home Depot and Lowe's Website which is what we have to write about... What I need is substantial content issues, please give me feedback and explain what the writer says or fails to say... What is your response to this essay? Best answer gets 10 points!!! Thanks guys.... The company websites I chose to go with were Home Depot and Lowe's. I chose them because they are very closely related, and big competition to each other. Home Depot and Lowe's are very similar stores. They are both stores for home improvement, and carry a lot of the same items. They carry some of the same brands, along with those who are store exclusive to each company. Home Depot's slogan on the website is “You can do it. We can help.”, while Lowe's slogan is “Let's build something together.” Home Depot has more of a slogan that is telling the consumer that they supply items for you to do the work yourself. Lowe's has just the combined, possibly telling the consumer that they can help you do what you need. Lowe's also includes “Improving Home Improvement” on the title of their website. The Home Depot website is categorized more by the actual item, whereas the Lowe's website is categorized more by location of the project and type of item. The Lowe's website has their categories with a few sub categories on the home page (possibly the most visited and/or most popular), and the Home Depot website just lists out the the product categories. The websites of both companies are shopping websites where you can actually buy products through the internet. Home Depot's front page starts off with the listed categories, discounts that are currently going on, in-store events and promotions and seasonal items. Lowe's front page starts off with home improvement ideas, how to guides, buying guides, design tips, and similar other things. They both take different approaches at sales. The Home Depot website is more about buying, and it seems like the assumption that you know what you need, or at least where you want to look. Although, the Home Depot website does offer various help tips and guides, it does not include as many, and does not seem to be a very big advertisement characteristic of their website. The Lowe's website seems like it wants to offer you help on your project. It offers you a lot on tips and help, which can be better for those who are not exactly sure what they want, or how to do. This actually kind of goes back with their slogans, with the one being more we have what you need for your project, and then the other saying that we can help you with your home improvement projects. They both offer a lot of visual images on their websites. The Lowe's website offers more pictures of the actual products in real situations, whereas the Home Depot website has more of just the product with no extra props or anything. Another thing, they both offer customer service of their websites. The Home Depot website seems to have more information about everything at the bottom of the pages. Lowe's has some, but not like Home Depot with shipping information, privacy, security information, etc. That is the information I have gathered for my essay so far.
If you were doing a home improvement/repair, would you use a sevice that verifies the contractor? I started a company that verifieslicenses/registrations, insurance, and background checks of your contractors. We also review contracts to ensure they have all the rrelevantinformation required to protect the homeowner. Our services include, scope of work review, down payment/scheduled payments (what's appropriate) Lien Waivers, change orders, warranty items, schedule, and project close-out. Question is, if it was affordable, would you use a service like this before you spent your money or signed a contract?

Husband completely shut off & lazy at home while his job gets the best of him? I work too. We have a one year old child. He is becoming more & more useless at home. Things he's promised for the past couple of years he has not followed through with. Little things, like minor home improvement projects, de cluttering his catch all areas, etc. After work, he comes home & sits there in front of the TV. Weeks & maybe months go by & finally I can't take it anymore & I try to let him know that I need for him to put a little more effort into helping me take care of the house, the yard, our son, etc. He rarely responds to me & usually lets out a big sigh & rolls his eyes as if to say that what I'm saying is completely ridiculous. Personally, I think he hates it when I open up honestly to him about the issues I am having because it's like putting a big mirror in front of him. How else can I go about this? How do you help your husband get out of his selfish rut? Ryde On: this message is for YOU: finally after about a month, I came home from my night job & my husband had done the dishes.....I was soooo appreciative that before I had a chance to put down my purse, I walked right into the living room where he was sitting & dropped to my knees & did the old "I'm not worthy" routine. He smiled & I thanked him at least 3 times. And he "gave up his freedom" to be with me? I guess I didn't give up anything huh? Betting you're bitterly divorced or just a single loser. REAL MEN'S INPUT WOULD BE NICE....DID ANY OF YOU GO THROUGH A PHASE LIKE THIS IN YOUR R/S? IS THERE HOPE??
Are you putting off improvements on your home? I'm wondering if others are going to continue with remodeling and improvements on their homes with the market the way it is. Are you going to wait? Here's my situation: bought a home a year ago. Paid cash for it, so no loans. We had rented it for 2 years prior, and we didn't get an inspection. I know, very BAD! This was our first home and should've got advice. We didn't want to move so paid. Now I'm researching and I think we paid too much for it. Nothing we can do now. It's a very small house (small rooms, small kitchen, 1 bathroom). It has a garage that will need to be torn down and rebuilt. Kitchen needs remodel. We gutted the bathroom and remodeled it. It's a livable place but not what I want. The yard needs work. We were thinking of building a deck or putting in a concrete patio on the entire yard. It's a small yard. We have 3 dogs, so keeping grass is impossible. There is hardwood under the carpet but when we pulled up some of it, we found that they had glued the carpet to the hardwood. So that would have to be refinished or lay down a floating laminate. The basement is unfinshed, hubby wants to finish it. The windows need to be replaced sometime and also the roof and siding. We don't have any leaking or anything but most of it is cosmetic. It's just ugly. If I had my choice i would knock down walls and reconfigure the layout. The upstairs is 1 small bedroom that is not being used. The area we live in is not a great neighborhood. It's not the worst but not the best. So do we go along with projects or just live with it the way it is? We may have some money coming and I don't know if we should put it into the home? We can't just buy another home that we would like because of bad credit. Who would we talk to to find out if improvements would be worth it in the area? Sorry so long! Thanx for any suggestions.
Invest in Roth IRA or use more Home Equity for Rehab Project? I currently have a stash of cash in a money market earning 3.61% APY. I also have a home improvement project set to start later this month. I have enough cash to cover about 40% of the project. I also have a line of credit locked to prime, currently 5.25%. Should I take some of the cash to max out my Roth IRA and thus borrow that much more against the house assuming investments will earn 8% over time - or - should I minimize my home equity debt in the short term. My job situation is good but not great. I am also putting away 5% of my paycheck monthly into a Roth 401K. I have also considered the fact that I could refinance the equity loan into a new 30 yr mortgage after the project. The downside there is that I am currently at 5.25% 5 years in to a 30 yr mortgage. Thanks for your input. FYI - even if I used 100% of my equity line, I would still have over 100K in equity on my home. I live just west of Chicago. Our housing market here has slowed but notthing like the devaluations of Florida or the west coast.

Home improvement: do I need to provide drinks? I am having people in my house working on a project. I noticed that they don't eat or drink. I offered Diet Cola (just what I had) at the time. They were very grateful. It's not a problem for me to supply them with drinks at all, my question - is it a practice? I'm novice I don't want people to accept my drinks if it is not proper. If it's OK - I'll get them as many as they need. Please share your experience thanks
If money was in the budget, what kind of home improvements would you do? I had to delete my previous question because after getting my first response I realize that how it was worded made me come off as a complete idiot and it was worded wrong. So, here I go again this time I'll be more careful on how I word it. LMAO I realize now after being in our home for almost 7yrs. that there's things about the house that I would love to put on the home improvement list. I'd have an arms length of projects to take care of. Like so many others, it's just not in the budget! What would you do with your home that you've been wanting to do for a long time but, unable to due so due to it not being within the budget? This is my home improvement list: Tear up all the carpeting and lay down flooring~ hard wood/tile More counter space in the kitchen repair some of the dents, bad patch job under the paint jobs from previous owners, tear down the wallpaper and paint. New Windows~ the woodwork on our windows outside is horrible weather has beaten them up. Better lawn- there's so many rocks and the grass feels like sharp straw instead of a nice green full plush lawn that's not patchy or rocky New Window treatment down the road as we have a toddler so, as you can tell a lot of stuff would have to wait anyways until he's older even if the money was there. LOL Thanks everyone for sharing I appreciate it. I'm sure we'd all love to do some stuff around our homes if we just had the money. We're a one person income so,things are definitely on a tight budget here! Hey snowman swing by give me an estimate on my windows they're crap! lol We all seem to have similar wish lists and some added luxuries. I'd like to have a multi-level deck myself. I'm in the beginning process of redoing the landscaping in our front island it's crap as well but, hopefully in due time it will be back to it's original beauty. lol rocks/clay is what I have to work with there. woo hoo! full sun as well so, I'll be planting some perinial seeds. forgetmenots is one of them I forgot what else I picked up. Bulbs didn't work in there too well. I have a black thumb a cactus died on me. What does that tell you! rmao... You have to have a sense of humor with it all or you'll go nuts!
Your opinion on these gifts for girlfriend on Valentine's Day....? my girlfriend has just about everything....she buys what she needs, so it's almost impossible to think of something she doesn't have.......that is unless we are talking about tools for her house. She loves to do home imporvement projects, but have inferior tools for the jobs she takes on. What is your opinion of buying a girlfriend tools for home improvement products for Valentines day...??? I bought her flowers the other day for her house, so I don't think i'm going to do the flowers thing....I think that is cliche'.
My future is in your hands.......? just for the heck of it can you guys help me out here....If you were me-would you A) Continue to lay in bed and not leave the house B) Go to my boyfriends house-while he works on a home improvement project and stare off into space C) Go to friends house that is begging me to come see him (who btw is reeeally hot and smells yummy) Ok - fire away

Does your martial arts instructor expect the students to do contractor work for free? Ours uses students who are skilled tradesmen to do all sorts of home improvement and landscaping projects without paying them for their time or materials. He also uses the services of an attorney who is one of his students without payment. He doesn't pay them in money nor does he trade lessons / instruction for their services. Of course, people who fall for it think they're going to be paid or rewarded in some fashion, and come to me in frustration when they don't. (I've been a student there for about 10 years) What are your thoughts on this? Is this practice the norm at other schools? This instructor owns a giant training facility with about 500 students in total. Of course, much of the work inside the facility was done by students who donated their time and materials. According to various accounts, there never has been a trade or a discount on lessons. The work being done by students is not teaching martial arts. It's redoing bathrooms, carptentry, plumbing, landscaping, legal, financial, etc.... both at the instructor's home and training hall.
My Girlfriend for 2.5 years I found out 6 months ago she has been going out with her ex-boyfriend? I have been dating My Girlfriend for 2.5 years I found out 6 months ago she has been going out with her ex-boyfriend 3 different occasions, Behind my back, To the Movies, Concerts, and to listen to Music. 3 occasions I am certain about there could be more. She says that she is only friends with her ex-boyfriend; And is only in love with me, And wants to be with me. I have taken her on several Vacations and Cruises, And done several major home improvement projects on her home over the past 2.5 years My Question Is this normal behavior for her to still see her ex-boyfriend? And should this behavior be tolerated? Please Give Me Your Opinion and Advice. Thank You.
Does your child attend a Program Improvement school? Because of No Child Left Behind my son's school is in program improvement due to low test scores for 5 years in a row. I'm a member of the PTA so I hear about the reasoning behind our low test scores, but it's really not surprise because our school has a lot of immigrants, mainly from Mexico. We are a farming town. The tests require that even children who are just learning how to speak english be able to read and write at the same level as children who've been speaking english their whole life. I really like my son's school and the principle's approach that she takes. She hasn't just thrown her hands up, she honestly thinks that we can help these struggling kids and up the test scores. Our school isn't the only one in PI school in our town, more than half the schools are and you can pretty much tell by where the school who aren't are located in much more affluent neighborhoods. My son is in kindergarten and he attends school from 8:35-2:35. The whole day kindergarten is also a result of the need for higher test scores (even though they don't take the tests until 2nd grade) I've noticed that all the work he brings home is strictly academic, nothing like art projects or anything that looks like they just get free time. Everything is about reading, writing or math. Everything. I was talking to my husband about this last night and he thinks that we're lucky that our son is in school at this time when the focus is so much on the academic aspect as well as test scores. I somewhat agree, somewhat don't. When I was in elementary is was a lot about expressing ourselves and not learning like our parents did. Do you think the tables have completely turned? Do you think this is more beneficial? I really hope that all this focus will benefit my son in the long run but it's just weird I guess to think that the school doesn't do anything fun during school hours. Their "harvest party" is to celebrate everything they've learned so far and has nothing to do with the Halloween holiday. Also something I think is weird, they can't just have a party, it's still about learning. I know I should be glad that they're so focus on my sons education but I really know it's more about test scores. What's your opinion, and I'd really like to know if anyone else's kids attend a program improvement school because this isn't just a problem in California, this is happening in schools all across the country.
How difficult is it to work with concrete? I've never worked with concrete but I need to complete some home improvement projects this summer. The main "detail" is that I cannot afford to pay anybody to do this. My financial situation is not good and will not be good for quite some time. Not only that but, I am working all by myself...can't afford to hire a helper either! Can somebody direct me to where I can read-up and learn concerning preparing an area, mixing, pouring and giving shape to concrete? The projects I'm preparing to work on include 1) refacing an 18-inch tall x 22-feet long retaining wall for a flower bed that's attached to the front of my house, 2) resurfacing the steps that walk-up to the front door of the house and 3) removing the existing (crumbled) sidewalk and pouring a new one. I checked at the local home improvement centers but could not find anything dealing with this subject matter. There was one book I saw on concrete but it focused on commercial-size jobs. Thanks very much for taking a minute to share your thoughts:) Happy summer!
What do you think about this situation? My friend bought a house with her bf a year or so ago. At this point they are still not engaged. A few days ago she was telling me that money is tight in her household because they are doing some home improvement projects. They are installing central air conditioning which is costing them an exorbitant sum, plus they are replacing the roof. She told me her bf is pushing to have these projects completed ASAP because he told her he plans on marrying her and having a child within the next year or two. This is a complete 180 from before bc he always said he didn't want to get married and have kids...repeatedly. She's all excited, but frankly, I am suspicious. She still does not have a ring on her finger, yet he recently bought himself an expensive motorcycle. Also, central air conditioning does not seem to be a necessity. Where we lives, it's only really hot two to three months a year. It's actually kind of a waste. Also, the roof did not yet need to be done, it needs to be done in the next few years. This is my thought: he's trying to fix up the house so he raises the value and can sell at a profit. Meaning, he's planning on breaking up with her. I just don't see why central air is such a priority...wouldn't you want to use that money towards an engagement ring and your wedding? The whole thing doesn't make sense. My friend is ecstatic and I think she's about to get dumped hard.
Which is more important? I have a ton of home improvement projects I want to do, but I don't know which is more important and which I should do first. I plan on doing at least 2 of these a year. I am wanting to improve the value of my house so I can have enough equity that when I sell it I can make some money. Can you put these in order in which you would consider the most important to least important? 1)Enlarge Master Bathroom 2)Replace Carpets with Harwood/Laminate 3)Enlarge Dining room 4)Add a retaining wall and level out yard 5)Enlarge rear deck 6)Replace Ceramic tile with Linoleum/Laminate 7)Remodel/Upgrade Kitchen 8)Remodel/Upgrade Main Bathroom 9)Retape/Repaint walls I have more that I want to do, but these are the main ones. Thanks for all your help!
What is a good tool chest / set to buy for a present for my boyfriend? Hi - Id like to buy a nice tool chest/cart for my bf for his 26th birthday - I cant afford to spend much more then $100-150, but Id like to get him a nice one if I can. He used to have one but it was stolen and I'm not sure what type it was or anything. I'm not very knowledgeable in this department, so I was wondering if those who are could give me some suggestions as to a good brand, model, etc. that he would like and where to start with looking for one to get. Also if anyone knows of any good deals on them, shoot them my way! Thanks so much for your help! *He doesn't fix cars or anything super mechanical like that, he just moved into a new house and I would just like to get him a nice tool chest/cart to keep in his garage that has all the tools he'll need for around-the-house tasks, home improvement projects, etc.
How are you supposed to leave your problems at home when you go to work when your problems at home are caused? by your job? I have alot of issues in my life but am usually ok when I am at work although I have had a lot of problems at work lately, I guess I must be losing my mind or something because I try hard but everytime I take on a big project I get criticized for it, either I was supposed to send it out because it was too big for inhouse production or I shouldn't have sent it out because we could have done it there. I never had any problems until recently my manager has been on me. I went back to work yesterday and I was feeling ok, didn't bring any home problems with me but as soon as I got to work, I got talked to about the job I took last week, I got a needs improvement revue, and on top of that my boss is only paying me half of the vacation hours I requested. I requested 30 and she is giving me 15, I have about to but we aren't allowed to take them at the same time, they stay in limbo and I really need that money. Now I will be short on my rent because if I ever do get the if I ever do get the other hours it won't be for a couple weeks because the checks are already prepared and deposited this friday. That will mean a 50 dollar late charge on my rent which I can't afford. How do you leave your problems at home when your problems at home are caused by problems at work? edit I have about 60 hours but she won't let me have but 15 for pay even though I took an entire week off.
Age makes a difference-? You are in the middle of some kind of project around the house. Mowing the lawn, putting a new fence in, painting the living room, or whatever. You are hot and sweaty. Covered in dirt or paint. You have your old work clothes on. You know the outfit, shorts with the hole in crotch, old t-shirt with a stain from who knows what, and an old pair of tennis shoes. Right in the middle of this great home improvement project you realize you need to run to Wal-Mart to get something to help complete the job. Depending on your age you might do the following. In your 20's: Stop what you are doing. Shave, take a shower, blow dry your hair, brush your teeth, floss, and put on clean clothes. Check yourself in the mirror and flex. Add a dab of your favorite cologne because you never know, you just might meet some hot chick while standing in the checkout lane. You went to school with the pretty girl running the register. In your 30's: Stop what you are doing, put on clean shorts and shirt. Change shoes. You married the hot chick so no need for much else. Wash your hands and comb your hair. Check yourself in the mirror. Still got it. Add a shot of your favorite cologne to cover the smell. The cute girl running the register is the kid sister to someone you went to school with. In your 40's: Stop what you are doing. Put a sweatshirt that is long enough to cover the hole in the crotch of your shorts. Put on different shoes and a hat. Wash your hands. Your bottle of Brute Cologne is almost empty so you don't want to waste any of it on a trip to Wal-Mart. Check yourself in the mirror and do more sucking in than flexing. The spicy young thing running the register is your daughter's age and you feel weird thinking she is spicy. In your 50's: Stop what you are doing. Put a hat on, wipe the dirt off your hands onto your shirt. Change shoes because you don't want to get dirt in your new sports car. Check yourself in the mirror and you swear not to wear that shirt anymore because it makes you look fat. The Cutie running the register smiles when she sees you coming and you think you still have it. Then you remember the hat you have on is from your buddy's bait shop and it says, "I Got Worms". In your 60's: Stop what you are doing. No need for a hat anymore. Hose off the dog crap off your shoes. The mirror was shattered when you were in your 50's. You hope you have underwear on so nothing hangs out the hole in your pants. The girl running the register may be cute but you don't have your glasses on so you are not sure. In your 70's: Stop what you are doing. Wait to go to Wal-Mart until they have your prescriptions ready too. Don't' even notice the dog crap on your shoes. The young thing at the register smiles at you because you remind her of her grandfather. In your 80's: Stop what you are doing. Start again. Then stop again. Now you remember that you needed to go to Wal-Mart. Go to Wal-Mart and wonder around trying to think what it is you are looking for. Fart out loud and you think someone called out your name. The old lady that greeted you at the front door went to school with you. In your 90's: Stop what you are doing. : /

Laying engineered wood flooring over vinyl flooring? Can engineered wood flooring be installed on vinyl flooring? I'm in the middle of home improvement project and have decided to lay some engineered wood flooring for my kitchen. The particular brand that I've bought requires glue-down installation. The problem is, there's vinyl flooring that's been laid with cutback and it's not going to come up without a significant amount of work and then re-preparation of the sub flooring. I've been to the local home improvement center several times and can't really get a straight answer as to if this is possible. I've searched the Internet and its about 50-50 yes and no. I'd really like anybody's input into my situation, as I am under a little bit of a time constraint to finish the project as this is my new house and I've got to move out of my old house in in a week. Thanks in advance to your answers!
Should I divorce my wife? I have been married for almost 40 years to a wonderful, hard working, loving woman. My children are all grown and out of the house. Other than children and home improvements projects, we have nothing left in common. There isn't much I can talk to my wife about. I have been corresponding with a lady from my country of birth for about a year, and recently actually met her. The sparks flew and the embers are still glowing. We share love of poetry and music, read similar books, and are equally spiritual, all traits I lack in common with my wife. And no, I was not unfaithtul in body. My wife watches HGTV and continues to define herself as mother and, soon, grandmother. She does not want to go out of the house or have friends. I ache to be with my spiritual soul-mate, yet I owe a great debt of gratitude to my loyal wife. Your comments, sans whips and chains, would be appreciated. Thank you all for your thoughtful answers, each based on wealth of personal experience, I am sure. I am a very young in body and spirit 61-year-old man. There are no villains in this story: I love/respect my wife and my wife loves me in that cozy old-couple way. What has happened is that while (I think) I was growing for the past 38 years, my wife has not. With kids gone, what unites us is our love of our children and mutual respect. Intellectually, we are worlds' apart, and the differences are now jarring. Yes, I recall what I saw in her - a platinum blond, gorgeous (still is) woman. My "soul-mate" is full of faults, not even as good looking as my wife, but her spirit is deep, as is her understanding of my soul. It might be that my wife, busy as she is in the lives of her grown children, would hardly notice that I am gone physically or emotionally. Perhaps, she also wants more freedom. And yes, we have marriage counseling scheduled, and I have been to a psychologist.
Help! Questions regarding city appraisal and acquisition of property from property owners of Charlotte!? So my parents just got a letter from the city of Charlotte (of North Carolina), and they want to get the property around my neighborhood appraised and apparently acquired(?). Below is the letter word for word (with some information left out for privacy/security): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ City of Charlotte Engineering & Property Management Real Estate Re: Project Name: Allenbrook/Westridge Project Number 671-09-005 The City of Charlotte views public improvement projects as important to maintain and improve the quality of life for the City and its citizens. In order to start these public improvements, the City must first acquire property from property owners affected by improvement projects. In our efforts to achieve these improvement goals, the City will secure an appraisal to determine a fair and equitable compensation for property needing to be acquired as part of the above project. We wanted to correspond with you in advance to let you know a certified, independent appraiser will perform a valuation of the land and improvements affected on your property by this project. The appraiser who will perform the appraisal work on your property is: T.B. Harris, Jr. MAI 1430 South Mint St., Suite 102 Charlotte, NC 28203 (704)334-4686 (704) 334-2759 Ref: 1018169-8406 You are encouraged to contact the apprasiers and advise them of any facts you feel will influence the value of your property. After the appraisal work is completed by T.B. Harris, Jr. MAI, the acquisition agent (THC, Inc. (704) 359-0722) will contact you to discuss this project. Very truly yours, Mark R Boone Appraisal Administrator ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When they state "property from property owners", are they referring to my family's home/land? Can the appraiser go on our property without our permission? Is there anything I need to be aware/cautious of concerning this letter?
Has anyone done stamped concrete on their own? My husband and I would like to tackle the front walkway of our house and while it looks like a manageable project with some planning, I want to make sure that I am not silly to think that we can accomplish this. We are do it your-selfers and feel that we are intermediate when it comes to home improvement. Any suggestions?
Which home improvements should i do to my house? We have an old 2 family house that needs alot of work. Our plan is to fix it up and then sell it when the market goes back up. I know alot of people say not to do huge expensive projects before sellijng because you most likely won't get all your money back. So I was wondering if, from the list below, someone could tell me which I should do and which I shouldn't: -insulation -Replacement windows (old, rotten wood windows there now) -Gas heating system (only gas on gas stove as heating source now) -Paint outside house (asbestos shingles now) -Gut out the bathroom and put new shower walls, tub and sink (mold now) -Remodel small kitchen area (counters and sink are extemely low, and counter rotting around edges, and mold now)

Annoying neighbors? HELP ME!? UGH. Our next-door neighbors are really annoying! I have NO clue why, but they're doing this home improvment project, have been since the beginning of the summer. They like to stretch it out for weeks and weeks and weeks instead of just doing it, and getting it done. I think it's because they like to torture us. I mean, in any normal situation I really wouldn't care what they were doing, but in this case, it almost ALWAYS interferes with whatever we're doing. Like, for instance, they wanted to paint their blue house green. Okay, yeah, whatever. Couldn't bother us, right? Wrong. They did most of their house in like two days, but when they got to the side of their house that is really close to our yard, he took THREE DAYS just to do that side of his house. And, the way our houses are together it's just like having someone in your back yard. I swear to god he must have coated it 5 times over. And, he likes to cut things as close to us as possible. I don't know what for, but he's been cutting wood a lot with this saw thing. Actually, I don't know what it is, but it makes a lot of noise. Again, I wouldn't care if he did it like any respectful person would, but he's making a really big deal out of it. He puts the saw as close as he possibly can to our house, (and I'm telling you, it's loud!) and he takes what would normally be like a 5-minute thing, and stretches it out for like 15 minutes, literally. And, just as yet ANOTHER example of how annoying this is, yesterday he had this HUGE peice of glass (I'm assuming like a front window) in his back yard. I figured he would be fitting it in his window. Wrong-o. He decided he needed to smash it for whatever reason, and he didn't just smash it, either. He would smash a little peice of it (or at least I'm assuming that's what he did) and five minutes later you'd hear another LOUD smashing sound. Five minutes later, another. And another. I'm getting SO pissed off right now, it's RAINING at the moment and he's still running that god damn saw. I hope he gets electricuted. What can I do? I can't very well go over and tell him to stop his home improvement but it's getting riddiculous! You can hear him out there working from 10 at night to 6 in the morning! Hellllllllp...

Teens: Please tell me what you think of my newest article(Improving Your Grades)? In school, most students fail while most students pass. In life, there is failure and success. We couldn’t keep failing, why? Usually, failing students have major and minor reasons why they fail. Most students feel lazy during studies. Most students do not catch-up their lessons while some gets peer pressured or stressed in school or at home. A number of students also fail because they have life, family or personal problems or there are some other causes. Here are some tips and tricks on how to improve your grades: 1. Get a pen and paper. Write down your weakest spots and subjects at school. - List those/this subject(s). Write down the known causes while you fail. Be honest with yourself. Ex. I’m failing in Math because I cannot catch-up the lessons very well. - After writing down the key causes, write down your possible solution on how are you going to perk up. Ex. I’m going to ask my teacher or get a tutor to help me. Note: Be sure to do every solution you have written down. It wouldn’t make sense if you do nothing. 2. Look, Listen and Learn. - Listen to your teacher very well. Pay attention to class. How will you learn and improve if you do not focus on your lessons? It’s a must. - List down notes. This is very important as this can be a reviewer during exams or homeworks. - List down homeworks, reports, projects etc. 3. Do everything you need to do. - Do all homeworks and schoolwork. Try not to miss. - Remember to ask help if you get stuck. - Get some references or sources to help you. Try to visit the library. - Follow the teacher’s instructions. 4. Believe in yourself. - Success is achieved when you have high self-esteem. Always be confident. Never down yourself. Try and Try until you succeed. - Sometimes failure indicates that we need to endeavour to achieve success. So, never give up. 5. Get some inspiration. - A supportive family will keep you motivated and it will lead you into a path of continous improvement and accomplishment. - Friends who support and encourage will also help. That’s all. Never stop trying. There is failure and success in life. Failure is unavoidable and it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. So, never give up! ©Copyright 2010© BTW, I'm 13.
Can I be a construction manager? I know this is kind of a weird question... here's the details. My wifes family owns/operates a fairly good-sized home building company ,maybe 50 homes a year. I have the opportunity to come work for them but not sure what function I want to sell my self on without looking like an a**hole. My Background: I've been working (10 years now) in a supervisory function for a large manufacturing company where I've learned to be pretty good with leading efficency improvement projects. I do not have a degree ( i dropped out after two years), but have always continued my education here and there learning things as they apply directly to business. I communicate pretty well in writing and orally and I'm descent with CAD drafting software and the MS office suite stuff as well as being farily strong in the math arena. Also, I worked in the construction trade for about three years right after high school where I learned most of the basics of being a carpenter. I'm a pretty self-motivated person and always do well working as a spear-head. Anywho, your advice, observations, suggestions, etc, are appreciated,.., Thanks! I can provide more info if needed, I have a meeting with the pres of the company tomorrow and I want make sure I don;t sell myself short while at the same time not getting in over my head, Thanks again! Working for a construction company reqiures that I have the General Contractor license?
Where should we start with our remodel? My fiance and I are buying our fixer-upper house for 10 grand from a local who owns much of the property in the area and is trying to get rid of it... and we are getting a home improvement loan on top of that to do more remodeling. This is our first house so we are learning as we go with everything. So far we have spent about 3,500 to make the place livable. Now we plan to: -put siding on our house and re-paint the foundation and porches -new windows -new front door -add an addition of a bathroom on the main floor(right now our bathroom is in the basement) -completely re-do our kitchen, which involves tearing down a wall and making the dining room and kitchen the same space -finish the second bedroom(carpet, put up a ceiling) -we have all the walls in the house primed, but need to paint them -new ceiling in the living room as well My questions is should we start inside or outside? Obviously we need to build our additionn before siding...should that be first on our agenda? One stipulation of this loan is that all work must be done within 6 months! We will be doing much of this work ourselves, with help from friends and family, so this will be a challenge. Just wondering where to start right now. Outside first or inside? My fiance keeps talking about starting inside with the kitchen, but I am thinking we should get the addition and outside done before worrying about inside. Mainly because inside projects can be done no matter what the weather, and outside ones should be done first since we live in the NE USA and only have a few months of warm weather before fall will be here again. What are your thoughts? My dad has built houses and a few of my sisters just finished building theirs a few years ago so much of our help know how to side, install windows, demo, do plumbing/electric etc....since we have never done this stuff before we aren't sure how long things take so good idea to prioritize and figure that out. We have discussed getting a contractor in here. Thanks so much for the suggestions and advice so far, very helpful!
College essay? Does it need improvement? College Essay Life as I knew growing up, affected me in ways I hadn’t realized until my older years. An English teacher once told me, to be a great writer—or at least appear as one—write what you know, this is what I know. At age twelve, my parents divorced and I was raised without a stable mother figure. My mother and sister were forced to move to Florida for financial reasons; my father consumed into his work as always, leaving my eighteen year old sister to raise my older brother and I. Our situation converted so brutally and abruptly, it wasn’t evident to us as to how this living arrangement could potentially destroy a child’s intellect and conformity—especially mine. Before our family dispersed, my mother most valued her children’s education. We all attended private school at some of Dallas’ most prestigious institutes. My brother was your average student: got into trouble quite often for missing homework assignments, projects, etc. On the contrary, he was quite the athlete. He now currently attends the University of Tampa on a full ride. As for me, I was the scholar-- the smartest one. I was exceedingly structured and well-behaved. I was the perfectionist. Within two years of the divorce, my existing schema slowly weakened: my grades weren’t what they used to be (in addition, no one was checking them) and my focus fell dramatically. I’d become lazy and unwilling. My sole conflict: I was in a living arrangement with no structure, no initial guidance, nor regulation. My sister was pregnant during my parents’ divorce and worked mediocre jobs while attending beauty school. She did lots to help her two younger siblings continue through school and extracurricular activities. I knew my sister had a plate full, so after my nephew was born; I often assisted her with motherly duties. Unfortunately, my sister began to feel “comfortable” with the idea of a live-in babysitter. I babysat so persistently, she and I began to think he was my actual responsibility. Our house was unkempt for the most part, and all the responsibilities were left on me--since I was the youngest girl. My relationship with my sister and father became fairly hectic: one thing after another. I hated my life and who I had become. Today is better, but not much has changed. I’ve matured and grown wiser over the years and have taken responsibility for my actions, no excuses. I keep things between family members cordial to avoid further confrontation and havoc. However, I still have responsibilities with care for my nephew as well as independent work around the house. As for school, beginning my junior year, I’d increased my extracurricular activities as well as my recurring in advanced classes. I’m not receiving a lot of help applying for college nor financial assistance, but it will not detain me. I refuse to accept failure and return home without a degree or without financial stability (I’ve had enough instability in my life already). I will not depend on other people and I won’t make any excuses based on my situation. I will do whatever I have to do to succeed because in the end, it’s all up to me to make something of myself. Comments, Suggestions??
Hello people, My name is Alex, I come from Germany and need any helps in revision of my home work.? Hello people, My name is Alex, I come from Germany and need any helps in revision of my home work. I learn English and have to make a home work for morning. As I have a lot of problems with English grammar I would appreciate if anybody can do a correction of my text. And here is it: THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE: File F Writing Practice Write a letter from Glen Christian to the First National Bank of Delaware after the meeting on 15. February. State what progress has been made in fulfilling their conditions for new loan and how you intend to tackle what remains. Don’t forget that you need the money urgently. Dear Sir or Madam, Hereby I would like to inform you on behalf of the Management Team of Elliott Industries, that the most points of the condition precedent have been already fulfilled. To give you a more exact picture about the current situation in the buyout running, I would like to point out the following positions with the indicated progress reports: Pos.1.0_Improvement of the current finance situation Progress report: The finance management has been strengthened by the appointment of a new Finance Director. Pos:2.0_Reducing of negative costs Progress report: Part of the DIY Division has been sold and the remainder wound up for a book loss of ₤350000,- Pos.3.0_Comprehensive data processing and management information system Progress report: The new data processing system is being installed but not fully operational. The vital stock control program will be operational in two weeks time. Pos.4.0_Alternative source for the key raw material Progress report: Rudge Pressings Ltd. is ready to go on the market and an offer must be made soon. As you can see, the improvement process defined under position one’Pos.1.0’ and two ’Pos.2.0’ have been done completely. At the present situation we are concentrating on Pos.3.0 and Pos.4.0, because these items are currently open yet. To save more precious time during the establishment of new data processing information system we decided to implement a new system in stages. This could give us a good opportunity to have a short reaction ways in the fall the system will work wrong. Therefore we created a time table for the project called “Implementation of data processing information system in stages”, which I enclosed to this letter. In relation to Pos.4.0 of condition precedent we need urgently your finance intervention. In effort to provide our company with an assured supply of the key raw materials and to create a financially sound grouping we certainly have to go ahead towards acquisition of the Rudge Pressings Ltd. Therefore I would like to ask you to give urgent attention to arranging the bank loan, as Rudge Pressings Ltd. is already on the market and we are not in position to loss any time. Based on the current situation creating a reaction finance force I would like to invite your bank’s representatives to visit our company in two weeks’ time at latest. I would like you to come prepared to outline your suggestions to the meeting in relation to the strategy development of Rudge Pressings’ acquisition and arrangement of the further bank loan. To arrange an appointment with us, please, fill you free to contact to my secretary Mrs. Pope. I am looking forward to seeing you. Your faithfully Mr. Christian Managing Director Elliott Industries
How to make an egg drop container with the following materials: *in descriptions*? Project: Newton’s Laws and Machines (AKA “The Egg Drop”) _______________________________________________________ Purpose: To develop a container to either slow down the acceleration, change the direction of impact, lessen the effects of the impact, or otherwise alter the natural course of events. The event is the dropping of an egg from a high place (2 meters and more). Requirements: Your container’s construction is limited to items from the following list in the quantities listed: 4 small paper cups (Dixie bathroom cups) OR 3 toilet paper rolls (not both—may not mix cups or paper rolls—cardboard roll NOT the toilet paper) 6 rubber bands or 6 packing peanuts (normal size small rubber bands) 1 sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper (may NOT be poster board….) 10 straws (regular size, no larger than the kind you get at McDonalds) 1 plastic coffee can lid 1 wire coat hanger 25 wooden toothpicks 1 sandwich bag string (one meter) masking tape (.5 meters; normal width tape, not extra wide) glue—only enough to secure joints or materials (not as a coating or for reinforcement) small washers (for weights), no more than 20. Working with cement ... would this work? I would like to make a mock-up of a "mountain" out of Styrofoam to use with our model railroad. I'm wondering if it would be feasible to coat the foam with some of that ready-mix cement you can get in big bags at home improvement stores. I'd like the completed project to be durable. Weight is not a consideration. Would it adhere to the styrofoam? How much thickness would you need to apply to get the final project to feel rigid to the touch and not "give" when you press on it? How much drying time would be required? Will this work at all? Thanks for your help! I've never worked with this stuff before.
Has the recession affected your marriage? Many of my friends marriages and LT R's have been seriously hurt by these current economic times. Has yours been affected? if so, how? lack of extra cash for vacations? lack of cash for build projects (home improvement) etc.
Looking at item on ebay and want to know if you think its a good buy? But why is it so cheap in price? HELP!? Remodeled our bathroom and really want a clear glass bathtub door. We have barely any money left under $200 for our project, i came across these glass bath doors on ebay, it seems cheap in price though since when we went to our local home improvement stores there are all $200+ So what are your opinions about buying this. Feedback score is 100% plus other people who bought the doors were satisfied.. what do you think the issue with these doors are that they are so cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/Bath-Tub-Shower-By-Pass-Sliding-Door-and-Frame-New_W0QQitemZ160378535620QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item25574e3ec4

Overall what do you think about your Broadband serivce then - happy / not happy? What improvements, if any, do you think your ISP should make to your Broadband service? Give us your opionions please. What is a marketing phrase for a design firm that goes with a "spring theme"? I am creating postcards for our new design firm. The front has a few before and after photos of different projects (we do bathrooms mostly so they are all photos of recent bathroom projects.) On the side it said "Spring is a time of renewal and restoration." Since renewal and restoration can also be design words, and spring is often a time of home improvements, I wanted to focus on that. I need to write something on the back now to actually get people into our office. So far I just hav e our logo & hours :/ Any ideas? Everything I am coming up with is sounding corny. "Throw your old vanity out with your spring cleaning..." lol..CORNY!
Is this a good idea; would you use this service? My brother has done pretty much every time of manual labor out there. Anything form building barns to welding train cargo containers... He is looking to start his own business. He has the idea as follows: Offer a service where he will come to any persons house who has a project that needs to be done; say they want a new deck. Since a lot of people now days cant afford, or don't want to pay, someone else to build it for them, but in the same breath don't know how to do it themselves - he was thinking he will come over, and teach you how to build it yourself. Show you what needs to be done, materials to use, etc... Kind of the same thing as a lot of home improvement stores do. Except they conduct classes in their stores, where as my brother wants to do more of a private lesson. He also plans on offer support along the way. So if a couple days into the construction of your new deck, you run into a problem, he will be available to help.... All of this for a certain fee of course. Whats your opinions. I want to get him some insight on if its a feasible idea. Because if there is a demand for this, it will really get things moving in the right direction for him.
US Mock Election Questions, whats YOUR answer? Name (first only- optional) Male or Female? Are you registered to vote? Age (you can give me a aproximation. example im 16 so i put 15-20) Of these issues, which do you feel is most important? A. the economy B. energy crisis C. health care quality and costs D. war in Iraq and Afganistan Which of the above is second most important to you? WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS REFLECTS YOUR OPINION ON THE ECONOMIC POLOCIES? A) international trade agreements like NAFTA have benifited our partner countries at the cost of American jobs and should be terminated or renegotiated to include better terms and protection for US workers and Consumer Goods B) the president should take measures to significantly reduce the federal budget deficit, which is projected to be $410 billion. Doing so would lower our trade imbalances, raise savings while lowering our need for foriegn debt, and improve our long term economic growth. C)the president should make improvements to our aging infrastructure. replacing bridges, investing in modern rail networks, and upgrading our outdated electricity grid would create more jobs and promote efficiencies that would benefit our economy. D) with oil prices high and jobs creation slow, taxes should be lowered to create more income to meet the rising bills. this would put money back into the economy and create jobs. E) uncertain WHICH STATEMENT REFLECTS YOUR BELIEFS ABOUT THE ENERGY CRISIS? A) the goverment should subsidize the reasearch and developement of alternative energy to reduce our demand for oil, as its harmful to the inviorment and increasingly expensive. B) as oil companies collect record profit with the increasing price of gas, the government should impose windfall profit taxes on the companies if they fail to increase investment in greater oil production or new energy alternatives. C) with the price of gas stretching the american pocket book, the goverment should suspend the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon to lessen the burden of drivers at the pump. D) the rise of oil prices is mainly due to an increase of demand, without a corresponding expansion of supply. to increase supply, the goverment should remove the ban on off-shore drilling so that oil companies can remove more oil from the ground. E) uncertain WHICH STATEMENT REFLECTS YOUR BELIEFS ON AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN THE IRAQ AND AFGANISTAN WARS? A) the US should stay in Iraq and Afghanistan until our military and political goals are achieved, no matter how long it takes. Our security and intrests are paramount. as the only world superpower we can do things alone without concern for world public opinion. B) the wars are still to be won and there goals achieved. when the military and political situations improve , our troops should slowly and gradually withdrawal. C) the war has not been successful in achieving the goals of making our nation safer. our in ternational reputation has been harmed. american casualties have been much greater than expected. all american troops should return home when the political status of Iraq and Afghanistan improves. D) the wars have damaged the reputation and power of the US. it is the best intrest of our country that our armed forces imediatly leave Iraq and Afghanistan in an orderly manner. let the people of both countries resolve thier own problems, and we will provide economic help when needed. E) uncertain WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REFLECTS YOUR BELIEFS ABOUT HEALTH CARE POLICY AND COSTS? A) the federal goverment has no responsibility for health care of private citizens. it should be the responsibility of the individual to gain health care coverage through insurance companies. self reliance and free market system should be used for all services in the US. B) the federal goverment should largly stay out of providing health care to americans. that should be done mainly through private sector. only the most needy citizens should be given basic level of medical assistance. C) the federal goverment should play a major role in assuring that affordable, quality healthcare is available to all americans. fedeal healthcare should be provided to all citizens who cannot get private coverage. D) a national healthcare insurance program is needed. all americans should be provided quality healthcare through a federal program, funded by tax revenues. health care is too important to be left to private enterprise. E) uncertain WHICH LEADERSHIP QUALITY IS MOST IMPORTANT IN A PRESIDENT? A) High Ethical Standards: honest, trusted, knows right from wrong B) Strong Decision Making Skills C) Patriotic: always puts country first D) Organized and a Team Leader E) Exellent public Comunicater: People person, crowd talker WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO LEAD THE COUNTRY IF IT WAS AT ALL POSSIBLE? A) Abraham Lincoln B) Franklin D Roosevelt C) John F Kennedy D) Ronald Reagan E) Bill Clinton WHO WOULD/WILL YOU VOTE FOR IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION?? THE UPCOMING ELECTION??? thank you all and it is okay if you only put the letters to the answers, i understand these views may not be exactly of your own. this a poll i am taking for my school and because there is no correct answer, i will let the votes decide the best answer. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. i dearly appreciate it.

Will the government ever lose this amout of control? http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/articles/9406861.html Wow, so this is the land of the bureaucrats home of the red tape.
Would it be rude of me to ask my neighbors to stop doing their home improvement project tonight? I live in a duplex and the people on the other side are in the middle of some major home improvement escapade. They're hammering and sawing and apparently ripping the floor up. They've been doing this ALL day and they aren't showing any signs of stopping...in fact, their friends just came over to help. I don't wanna be rude, but I have to get up at 6 AM and I kinda need to sleep. Would it be really rude of me to go over and ask them to stop?
Can any one suggest me any Home Improvement Store nearby Michigan? I am about to get my home renovated and moving ahead for home redesign. I have to work on several different projects like kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms as well. But i would like to also ask the priority of the Home Improvement Projects that should be considered first.

Has anyone been their own contractor on a home improvement project? Were you able to save alot of money? Here is what I am thinking. Plumbing for instance, I could have a plumber tell me where in the floor or walls he/she needs to get at. I would then tear the floor or walls myself, then the plumber would just go and do his thing. same with electrical. Am I on the right track?

Have you or do you know anyone who has done a home improvement project through Home Depot? I know of one person that attempted to and they were SOOO difficult she had a 2 room flooring job done somewhere else and someone else that had a fence installed by "them" (they contract EVERYTHING) and she waited 2 months for them to get it together then it was 2 feet too high when they were done and had to do it again... What is the deal??? this just sounds friggin horrible, any stories???

How do I install Crown Molding or Mouldings in my Home? I am recently a new homeowner and I'm very excited, but I want to take on some home improvement projects. I love the look of crown molding and would really like to tackle this job myself (b/c of a limited budget). Does anyone have any solutions or tips as to how to install crown moulding properly? I would love a step-by-step guide or possible video of how to install the moldings. - Any answers about crown molding instillation would be helpful. Thanks! :)
Home improvement contract question? We are doing a home improvement project and our contractor gave us an estimate of $33, 000. We are already $6,500 over that estimate and we still have a long way to go before it is finished. Our contract says we are billed on time and materials. Is there any law that prevents a contractor from going 50% over budget (that is probably where we will end up) and just saying "oh well, that is our material and labor costs"? We didn't make any substantial changes that would have increased the budget.
Where should I look for a home improvement loan? We are looking for a home improvement loan to start a couple of projects on our new home. The loan amount should be something around $15,000 to $20,000 with a low APR. Any suggestions on where to look? We're in Indiana.

Can I cancel a contract to have a home improvement company install cabinet door? I have signed a contract to have a home improvement company install cabinet doors, they gave me 3 days to break the contract which I did not do. Now my finances have been destroyed, and I cannot proceed with the project. I cancelled the project before they gave me an installation date. They say that I HAVE TO proceed. Do I have to? I can't. I have paid no money so far.

What's best for us...Home equity Loan or Line of credit? We would like to do several home improvement projects and pay off some credit cards. The HELOC option seems to be more appealing to us so we take only what we need yet getting a loan gives us the option to hold the funds in a high interest bearing savings account (4.50 APY). How do I know what is right for us?
How do you prioritize home improvement projects for the resale of a home? My husband and I are planning to move as soon as we find a home that fits us. We have been looking for a year now with no luck and with the housing market being so bad, it might be a while so we have decided to do some improvements to our home in the meantime to increase the value of our home. We want to paint, put tile in the bathrooms & kitchen, add more insulation, finish the basement, maybe add a deck, etc. How do we know what is the most important to do first since we can't afford to do everything at once? Also, fyi, it was a brand new house when we bought it, however, it is one of those subdivision cookie cutter houses that wasn't built with the best quality or workmanship. It's not a dump by any means, but it could use some improvements here and there. Any advice is appreciated!
What's my better home energy savings investment, windows or insulation? I own a very nice house but it is old - built in about the 30's. It does not have insulation in the exterior walls so the house has trouble holding our AC in the summer and our heat in the winter. The windows, although newer at some point, also need replacing as they "leak" air due to their age and due to the worn-out trim and caulking that need to be replaced. If all else is equal and I have only X dollars to spend on my next home improvement project and both projects cost the same, should I do the insulation first with my money or do the windows?? Which upgrade gives me the better energy improvement for the investment?
What to expect from a home visit? We are starting the process for an international adoption. Part of this is a home visit with a social worker. I am wondering what I can expect from this. Is it somewhat informal where they check out our home to make sure it is clean and safe or it is more in depth. Should we do some home improvement projects (i.e. paint the bedroom, clean up the landscaping, etc.). If it helps we are going through All of God's Children. Any information on the process would be helpful.
Marriage is a home improvement project!? I've just started Yahoo Answers yesterday. I had read a lot of people having marriage issues. I have a good marriage, it's something that me and my spouse works at. Just like a house, as it needs fixing and improving as the years roll past, a marriage does also! What kinds of things do people do to make their marriage work, making marriage and family life fun?
I have some DIY home improvement construction debris. How should I get rid of it? I've got some destroyed cabinets, an old door, some pipes, some scrap lumber, and some scrap plywood. This is all the result of a few home improvement projects. It's all too big to fit in my normal trash can. My trash company won't pick up anything that isn't in their trash can. I called a dumpster service, and they will drop off a dumpster for $80. A trash hauler will come by for $120. I was hoping for something a lot cheaper. Any ideas? Thanks for the replies so far. Some more details: - I live in a beach town in Los Angeles county. The houses are very close to each other and yards are very small. So burning is not possible in my area. - I looked into driving my trash to the dump myself. LA is a big place, and the only public "dump" I could find was 40 miles away. And they charge by the pound. And I don't have a pickup or trailer. So after renting a pickup or trailer, then driving 40 miles, and paying to drop it off, this would be a huge hassle and expense. Right now, renting a dumpster is looking like the best option. Or finding a community dumpster (even if it isn't my community!) and tossing this stuff in.
How long should it take to get back an estimate from a home improvement contractor? I've been waiting 3 weeks for two estimates from different contractors on a couple of small home improvement projects. I've already called once for a follow up. Move on or wait longer? OK....I've decided to move on and get other contractors to come and make estimates. What would be the best way to choose reliable and quality contractors without having any referrals? So the phrase "no job too small" on their advertisments and phone book ads really don't apply? I have a clean house, never said I didn't want to spend too much money, and collectively all three projects in my opinion are worth the time to send me an estimate. I called one of the contractors again last night and left a message. Still, no return call. Bummed. Thanks for all of your responses they are all good and I appreciate your input!
