How much power does the special education program at my school have over a diagnosis? Well, I have a meeting scheduled and I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this kind of thing. They gave me paperwork because they want to make changes to my son's IEP. He is 5 and was diagnosed with moderate mental retardation right around 4 years of age. I was able to find the right group of doctors and professionals to do that because he was in early intervention from 6 months of age. The school report said that his diagnosis is developmental delays. Well, they said that they have not seen evidence to support a moderate mental retardation diagnosis. So, I asked them if they had a copy of the diagnosis of mental retardation and they said no. Somehow, the special needs pre-school did not transfer his records properly or they were not reviewed properly. Anyway, I gave them a copy of it. Now, we are going to have a meeting to discuss his eligibilty for services. They want to put him in the classroom with normally developing peers. I'm not against that, but I know my son's behavior is totally consistent with the moderate mental retardation diagnosis. I have worked with him intensely though and still do, so they are saying his academic skills and physical abilities are beyond what his diagnosis would suggest. They don't have authority to change his diagnosis based on 2 months of special needs Kindergarten do they? WOW - isn't that diagnosis part of what makes him eligible for special needs services? Developmental Delays isn't really a diagnosis that I know of and it doesn't qualify a child for receiving therapy or SSI. I know my son doesn't fit lockstep with any diagnosis really but I do no that due to his behaviors he would need a one to one assistant to be in the regular classroom all the time. Has anything like this happened with your child? What was the outcome? I know I have to fight for my son to receive services but - they have to accept the diagnosis of a nuerologist and extensive group of 5 therapists over a Kindergarten teacher, speech therapist and a physical therapist who have only seen him for 2 months right? I feel like all of the hard work I've done to help my son is going to backfire if he exceeds what his diagnosis says he should be able to do. But, it's my training that made that possible. It doesn't mean that he doesn't have the right diagnosis - it just means he has had exceptional training.

Are you seeing more kids that are difficult to identify with special needs in school? I work primarily with kids falling within the autism spectrum. More and more I'm asked to do observations on kids who have poor social skills, attentional problems, phyical uncoordination, literal understanding, don't get humor,etc......basically they are quirky kids. Often these kids are referred for testing because Asperger's syndrome is suspected. However, testing results do not indicate Asperger's or autism or NVLD. I've even seen physician reports that say, "Asperger-like, have symptoms similiar to autism, but are not likely to be autistic". Many families take their kids to various specialists and no one can pinpoint what is wrong. Working under IDEA these kids don't tend to qualify for services b/c their academics are okay. As I said, they are quirky....which isn't a bad thing necessarily (In my opinion) but they don't fit in with their peers and sometimes appear to be quite unhappy. I'm just wondering if other professionals are seeing kids with similiar situations? These kids also do not meet criteria for anything else (ADD, ADHD, auditory processing disorder, sensory integration, etc.).....

Hello There is a school in Brisbane, Australia; where children have a system to follow, which reminds me of the school in the movie Harry Potter. Some things happen there, that is never written in the school report or discussed with the parents. Certain children, whom are regarded as the teacher's pets get special treatment from the teachers. They are asked to go and see the teacher after school, so that they can claim their reward; which in a bottle stored on a shelf in the head-teacher's filing closet. The bottle contains a chemical that tastes strongly of bubblegum, which leaves this taste in their mouth for 6 months (which they says is wonderful). It is non-toxic of course. They only give this to the privileged kids, the ones that are 'teacher's pet' or a prefect. They are simply known to the children as... "The special kids". You cannot ask for this to happen to you, that is rude; you have to be offered it (regardless of the fact that you cannot let them know in an alternate way, like a guest are expected to wait until they are offered), even hinting can lead to you getting a highly embarrassing response. Children are far too shy to ask for this as a result, but they are frustrated because they really want some, but they are just too shy to ask. The special children often walk pasting saying "You wan't some? Can't have it". Those that have this pleasurable experience bestowed up on them will be treated like royalty and will wear a robe like in the picture of me above, often for the rest of their school carrier. These children are given powers to discipline other kids; including sending them to detention, making them do home-work, they are even allowed to administer corperal punishment. There was one allegation that such a child threaten to give another normal child, the death penalty! One school child told someone about this special treatment of these kids, and that child went missing. He went into the pottery class, and never came out again; all the police could find was a pile of ashes in the kiln and the child's clothes all rippped up. The police think that the child was roasted alive by the head-teacher as punishment. What do you think of this school? What should happen? CREED

Conservatives: explain to me why you think it's fair to offer vouchers for private schools with the funds for? those vouchers deducted from public school funding, but when someone suggests that private schools -as institutions which are recipients of public funds- should be held to the same standards as public schools in terms of reporting student test results you cry foul? Personally I'm fine with private schools getting vouchers, as long as the public has complete access to information on how those schools are run, how the students in those schools score on standardized tests, and information on percentages of students who are expelled for behavioral issues or students who are receiving specialized instruction due to special needs status. If you guys wouldn't try to protect the right of those private schools to hide that information, then use the "they are private institutions" argument (which is pure bullshit and does not apply if they're going to be receiving public funds) there would be far less opposition. @ Home Schooled, you and I are on the same side in this argument. I think it's ridiculous that Cons claim private schools are better based on a few studies conducted by Ayn Rand think tanks and try to justify the right of private schools to hide information.

How should I react to just finding out my Boyfriends son is a special needs child? My BF's son is very rude to me, but I just found out things I didint know before. He has great difficulty with reasoning and language skills, has memory problems, and reads,writes and spells at a 2nd grade level. He also has behavior problems:poor manners and NO EMPATHY for anyone. He is 12 but very childish for his age. Why is this woman writing these student complaint reports? I attended an aesthetic program in April 2009 and then after a few month found the school students too controlled and quiet for my likely. In Sept 2009, the school told me that due to my fragrance allergy they could not accommodate me because they relocated and it would cost hem millions of dollars to change their product line to accommodate me at their new location so they stopped my course. I got accepted in a new school and filed a Human Rights Commission complaint against the old school. To my surprise this morning I received the school's defense which listed 7 student somplaint reports of which 4 of them were from the same student who said she could not stand to be near me physically or verbally and that she was writing every day reports on me and my behaviour to the school owner to get "rid " of me as she found me uncomfortable to be around. I was in shock. She reported that I made comments, insulted her, did what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it and that I was targeting her as I used her garbage can sveral times in class when I had my own . She found me dirty, sloppy, aggressive , insulting, and requiring special attention since I had a "fragrance allergy". She found me racist/sexist and against "gay and lesbians" and thought I should be "removed from this planet entirely" , I cried when I got the reports and the defense. I am replying to these allegations. I have GOT to change my schools now!? (Very long story)? Please don't report me or assume I am a troll, because of the name in my avatar, coz the name is what I really am. I'm shy, I don't talk to anybody in school because I'm shy. I am in Special Ed coz I have Asbergers Syndrome, and I'm in a special program in school. My program used to be in another school last year, my program used to be Middle/High School, in a K-12 school building, but then they switched to my current high school because the other school had no room, so now my program is all high school, which I am lucky, because at that time, I was moving on to high school. This is gonna be a long story so hang on there. Before I moved to the K-12 school, I've transferred to many schools before because I was bullied there. I wanna change my current school now, my mom agrees, but my dad doesn't because he told me I just gotta deal with it, but the thing is, I've TRIED to deal with it before but it's not working, and I tried telling the teachers, principals, and they don't help, this school is not any different either. I started that school in September, the students were different from my last school. At least the students were welcoming in my last school, this school, the school was an unwelcoming enviorment. OK, I come from a diff town, coz like before, I am special-ed, and I take the school bus to go to school, I never introduced myself coz I was shy, but from the reviews of people that are in the same program as me, they introduced themselves to the kids and they say that they come from a different town, a Regular kid says "Oh, you come from the program where retarded people are in?", and then they would just end the conversation and laugh about it to their other friends. I'm telling you, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in that school, is snobby, preppy (No offense to you preps, I am preppy too), and b#tchy. In Spanish class, I tried introducing myself to this one girl that sits right in front of me, but she just gave me a look and laughed, and talked and laughed about it to her other friends, who looked at me and started laughing too. In my school, there are Preps, Gangsters, people that are trying to act tough, and Koreans who hate people that doesn't speak the same language as them. So I got depressed again and started being absent from school at least once a week. But that's not part of it, the part of it is that all my friends from the program are friends with this certain rowdy crowd and they are now against me because one of the girls from the crowd told them to not talk to me. I tried talking to my old friends, but they always say a few little things, or tell me to shut up. Out of this whole school, I only made ONE friend, and I'm only with her at lunch and at gym class, but the problem with her is that whenever she doesn't have anyone else to hang out with, she hangs out with me, no problems at lunch and gym class coz were both always together, with another friend of hers. My friend always claims that I'm her best friend, but one time, we both had a field trip in school, and she hung out with her other best friends, and I tried hanging out with them at one point, they all (even my so-called best friend) just ignored me, and I just hung out by myself, sat by myself on the bus, and I was alone on the pep rally. A new girl came to my spanish class that came from Latvia, she came to school, and soon enough, the new girl was just as bad as everyone else, and she even bitched at me one time because I didn't know how to do a spanish problem. My spanish teacher is a snob too, she picks favs, which are all the fake plastic preppy b#tches, or people that join in after-school sports. By the way, ALL the teachers, staff, administators, EVEN THE PRINCIPAL are snobby, and pick favs, and usually their favs are whoever joined in an after school activity, they really hate people that are "troubled" (I fit to that category). Somehow, when theres group activites, I'm always stuck in a bad group. In Science, I'm in a lab group of 3 korean people in my group and they never let me do the activities, so I'm always sitting there. In cooking class, my group never lets me do anything either and this girl in my group always blames me for every little thing I do wrong, and one time, she said that everyone in her group is nice but me, because I always try to "sabatoge" the group or whatever the hell she is saying. There's this one girl in spanish class that always laughs or glares at me for no reason at all, and everyone says that she is the nicest girl in school, but in my opinion, she's NOT. This month, there are those preppy girls that sit around my table, one in back, the other in front, and the WORST OF THE WORST sits across from me (I'll call her Lindsey), she always talks bad about other people and talks crap about the new girl and says that she hates everyone that doesn't live in the US, and she hates blacks. And yet, she has alot of friends, what the hell!!? I'm the nicer one and she's mean, and she happens to be th the popular girl in school. Anyway, they talked bad about me behind my back, and I was sitting RIGHT in front of them and I can hear everything. They said that I never talk, that I'm retarded, I have ADD, have I lost my medicine, etc. And they were even looking at me and laughing. I didn't like that at all and I wanted to say something to them, but couldn't, because I'm afraid of standing up to myself, so I thought they probably wouldn't do anything, but I was DEAD WRONG!!! Two weeks ago, they started talking and asking me about random stuff like if I am stupid or something, then out of nowhere, they started asking me if I am gay, because I keep staring at them, I said NO! I just have a staring problem, that's all, and I'm currently working on it, and then they just say, yeah, you're gay alright, and they started spreading the rumor that I am a lesbian, that I am desperate for attention, that I slept with Lindsey's ex-boyfriend, etc., and now I'm pretty much the most hated person in the entire school, everyone stares at me now, everyone laughs at me, everyone talks about me, everyone is ignoring me, even my best friend is against me and now I'm all by myself on lunch and gym class, and now Lindsey, her group of preppy friends and her current boyfriend are now starting to bully me physically, they always take my lunch and throw it in the garbage, they always ask me for the remainder of my lunch money everyday, if I don't, they (and her bf) beat me up after school, block my locker and call me names, take my backpack and always throws it to the next person if I try to catch it, they once stole my lipgloss from my backpack without me even knowing it, put gum in my hair, they would draw naked pictures of me on a piece of paper and write "SL#T", and would make everyone sign the paper saying "We all hate (my full name) so much, we want her out of school, or even better, DEAD", and then in the back, it would have a drawing of Lindsay and her boyfriend shooting me and I'm laying in a pool of blood and they both put their thumbs up, and everyone is now calling me the lonely loser (which inspires me to put the name next to my avatar). One time, me and my mom came to the principals office and told him everything and the principal said he'll do something to stop it, but he never did, he doesn't care. Somehow, Lindsey found out that I tried to get her in trouble, so now she and her friends are bullying me now more than ever, and on Thursday, after school, she, her friends, and most of the kids from the school circled around me and they all took turns beating me up, and I didn't go to school Friday and I didn't go today either, because I am TERRIFIED of all the kids in my school, my mom kept calling the program, but all they do is call the principal, and neither my program, nor the principal, did anything to solve it. They don't care. I'm sad that even my program doesn't want to take part of this, because I didn't have a problem with the kids in the last school, and now in this school, I do, and they don't wanna help. I have to get out of this school now... Now it has gotten to the point where I refuse to go back to school, despite how good my grade was, and that school is supposed to be a great school and very strict. My special needs child has missed 21 days of school, all excused with doctors notes. I am being taken to court I am being taken to court for contributing to truancy. What the hell? She is special needs, is in special ed classes at school. She gets ill a lot and goes to the doctor EVERYTIME she is sick. I provide the school with documentation of this everytime and her absences are listed as excused on her progress reports. However I have to go to court next week for truancy charges. This happened last year also, I paid about $100 in court costs and the charges were dropped. I was instructed to continue bringing dr. notes for each absence (last year). What are my rights, I feel I am being harrassed. What can I do??? I can not afford to hire a lawyer. If anyone can help...please do!
